Hey it’s Jamari from Readgeek3 here with another review for GEEKMAS. This review is for another one of my favorite series which, The Mortal Instruments. The six book series is written by Cassandra Clare who is also known for The Magisterium Series with co author Holly Black. Since the book series is long and I will be reviewing the entire series at once like I did with the Divergent Series, I will split the review into two parts.
In this first part, I will be reviewing the first three books in the series City of Bones, City of Ashes, and City of Glass. So now lets get started.
City of Bones
In the first book of the series, when Clary Fray goes to a club with her friend Simon and crosses paths with a group of Shadowhunters, which are a group of demons-slayers which end up saving the world from dangerous monsters. Next her life starts turning around quickly when her mother Jocelyn disappears and next thing she knows she is entered into an institute and enters the shadowhunter world.
I’ve read this book a while after I saw the movie adaption for this book. Although I enjoyed the movie adaption it left too much out of the movie and changed a lot of things in it and I have to say I liked the book better.
City of Ashes
In the second book of the Mortal Instruments, Clary feels like her world is upside down an wishes it could go back to normal. After being revealed to a shocking secret, her relationship with her newfound brother Jace Lightwood has changed majorly. Her mother Jocelyn is in a deep coma and her and her friends are searching for her evil father Valentine and the stakes start rising when the mortal instruments go missing and Jace is immediately suspected.
This is one of my favorite books in the series aside from the final book, City of Heavenly Fire, (Part 2 review). Like most of you guys know how most sequels aren’t as good as their prequels, this was a very good sequel. Like the previous book, this was supposed to be turned into a movie adaption but was axed when the first movie failed in the box office and a new adaption was announced.
In City of Glass, Clary is still trying to save her mother’s life and must travel to the City of Glass, which is the ancestral home of the Shadowhunters and needed specific permission to enter the city. But problems quickly occur when her best friend Simon, now a vampire who can mysteriously stand in sunlight without burning and her brother Jace does’t want her to go. So she uses her powers to create a portal and travels to the City of Glass without Jace and the other Lightwoods knowing. There she meets a mysterious Shadowhunter, Sebastian who is a key character in the book which makes the ending very dramatic betrayal and climax.
This is one of my favorite books in this series which was originally planned to be the final book for the series until a book series based off of Clary’s best friend Simon was axed and three more books were announced and I think this decision was for the better and effected the rest of the series in a great way.
About the new adaption I mentioned earlier, since The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes was cancelled, Constantin Film announced a Television Series it be in production and felt the books would be necessary to produce in a tv series due to movie’s cutting out too many important things and a show would serve the series purpose greatly. I personally think this would be a smart decision and I would enjoy to see the series be carried out on TV.
Though whether I like the series or not varies highly for me. I loved most of the casting for the movie adaption and would like it if most of the cast members would return to reprise their roles. One cast member I hope returns is Lily Collins who was casted to play Clary Fray in the movie adaption. But who knows. They may use the contract they had for the City of Ashes Movie for the tv series or give the members the opportunity to return and decline if they feel like it and recast from their. But that’s all for today’s post for GEEKMAS and look for Part 2 which is coming sunday!
